I totally realize this band doesn't need my lip service since there's a galaxy of studded tweens in stretch jeans with 4 belts apiece that are totally diapers right now about this band. I honestly thought they were from Texas, you know, where more and more late 80s/early90s born kids with peach fuzzy faces make the jump from Op Ivy and Hot Topic to bullet belts and World Burns to Death every week. Which is fine, we all start somewhere, and by the time they can go to a non all-ages show they are shunning raw punk and hardcore for whatever fad is coming next, reoriented post-punk goth-purism, "deathrock" or whatever its destined to be. I'm straying off topic, the point is this: this band sounds exactly like you think they would. Some songs are totally kill, some are laxative. Their name makes comparing them to GISM redundant, so shut up.

I'd think balmy Taiwan would be among the last places that a great black metal band could happen, proof of my ignorance. I've long been in love with Taiwan in a general sense, but that in no way colors my judgment concerning this record. It would be cool if more intense music were leaking out of the People's Republic of China, I mean, how many other black metal bands will go pee pee in your coke? The band name is written 黑冥煞 and the kanji can be read to mean 'black deep ghost' but the band's English name is Inferno Requiem. (Gloomy Night Stories) is tough, scary black metal with crazy drumming that is not at all technical, it's sloppy and powerful, which I prefer to technical blast beats that are just barely tapped out to conserve stamina. This drummer could play without drum mics, few metal drummers can. It's reffreshing to see cover art that isn't all forests rendered in charcoal, really, look at that cover art! Stew pots of Buddhist hell, that's a black metal record! If that doesn't wind your cock-clock from 6 to 12 then seriously, go to sleep and never wake up. You aren't needed.

This record is amazing, listen to it in headphones and really lose it or route it through your bass amp and feel it rattle your organs. I've done both. I have a tattoo of the cover art from this record, that's how much I love it. Drones, multi-layered and textural tonalities and nothing but. It's both beautiful and ominous. Jason DiEmillio, the guy who made this record, killed himself when he went deaf. Sound meant that much to him. A single, deep listening to this and you should be able to understand why.

This is a really good folk record. If I heard the future me saying that 10 years ago I would have shot myself in the face then and there. Still, it's so good I became a hypocrite for liking it. Features First American (read: Native American) instruments and amazing prosaic/poetic and often nonsensical lyrics which I find really engaging. Half of why I listen to old Leonard Cohen records is the lyrics. People can withstand Bob Dylan singing poorly through his nose because his lyrics are interesting. Joanie Mitchell is very verbal. There's not much to folk music besides capos and lyrics, so you have to perfect the details. In summary: really good folk record, listen to the 'Buried in Teeth' song first and you'll agree with me sooner.

This is near the top of my top 5 favorite punk records of all time. All the Icons of Filth releases from the 80s on one disc. Stig is dead, tip your Stella's.

Legends of fucked up from Miami. Two broken guitars and a banshee on drums. Or rather a university professor of humanities on guitar down tuned to H, a free lance physicist (sometimes for Halliburton) on guitarded hack saw and a Haitian rights activist and community events organizer on punctured heads, cracked cymbals and splintered larynx. You can't make this shit up.
Besides the one-sided Black Bean and Placenta LP and 'Ride A Dove', this is my favorite HP release. It's ironic how huge this band is right now. Let's just say that if I auctioned half of my HP records right now I could have 24 karats in my grille.

Look at that cover art, it looks like some RISD kid drew it. Reissued on HEAVY METAL SUPERSTAR records, adding to its awesome ridiculousness. This is pretty thrashy compared to their later screechy black metal thing. Sabbat were formed in the early 80's in Mie prefecture, way out in the countryside. As with all Japanese metal bands, this joke never gets old. The logo looks like it says ABBA on a winged inverted cross. You must hear this:

変なスカンジパンク。80s変CORE。ちょうっとAPPENDIXぽい、でも違う。本当にオリジナル。
Try to google some pictures of this band and see what you get. I love Scandinavian hardcore from the 80's because it's all so weird, fast and catchy; but this is something else entirely. Emerging from the Swedish punk scene of that time, they responded to their peers' efforts with a musical red herring (like Swedish Fish candies). Comparing this band to anything else is pointless, describing it is difficult enough. Mongo jazz thrash? Try it out.
Like critics on Reading Rainbow always say: "You don't have to take my word for it!"

DETESTATION is my favorite jism record. The trouble with Sakevi and all those Burning Spirits bands is that they love money so much. How punk is that?* That's why it feels so good to download and bootleg their music. I hope they all get ass cancer and die like Randy Uchida.

Ecstatic Sunshine. Just guitar+guitar. No bass, drums, effect pedals, riffing, chugs, wanking. There are some vocals, but they seem like an afterthought and lack any lyrics or even syllables. Dudes are from Baltimore, where drive-by shootings make it too dangerous to go outside or hang out in the living room so they spend all their time in the basement writing technical strum ditties that add by subtracting. Listen to it while cooking.

Icelandic black metal that is pagan themed and thus may/may not be racist. One song sounds like disco. Reykjavík, population 202,000 and capital of Iceland, uses geothermic heat for energy. This album may have been recorded by indirect use of subterranean volcanoes and features lyrics sung in a language that has been virtually unchanged in 2,000 years. Members of Thule went on to form Curse whom also released a fine album not long ago which also may have been recorded using earth heat and features more lyrics sung in archaic Norse. I imagine the Icelandic metal scene as being Curse and Solstafir shredding hot licks on either side of a steaming crack in the ground.

Harsh, "open sourced" black metal (whatever that means) that is so inventive and scary you don't miss the surprising near-lack of the typical staccato/blastbeats which are black metal orthodox. So unlike all other black metal bands that one is tempted to write them up as "black metal" instead of black metal. Emphasis on scary. Members of the amazing HAVE A NICE LIFE, another band that defies a unanimous genre definition. Guest starring Art Bell.
