5 FILMS THAT I LAUGH AT

5. Caligula
Because the middle aged-fucking is revolting enough but when offset by Malcolm McDowel's overacting and the Playboy channel production values it becomes stratospherically over the top. To laugh at.

4 Baby Boy
All of Snoop's attempts at dramatic acting are funny. The "oh no he didn't!" domestic violence cunnilingus. Pee's drink selection. "Where was you? Let me smell yo dick.." Melvin's African Squats. "Yo my rib girl." Alizé a day. Genius.

3. Gummo
Some junkie fell out of his roachy tree house in west Nashville, walked around with a frog cinematographer and filmed white trash, no, caucasoid refuse lounging about expressing themselves perfectly with a vocabulary of 25 words or less whilst drinking beer on their car seats/lawn furniture. Capturing amazing monologues, single digit IQs and amazingly "natural" sets. Got some glue sniffers to "act" and got some NY art scene fucks to act, promote and release it for him. "This wabbit smells like pussy!".My favorite scenes are the bathtub, actual sex offender (paroled earlier that same afternoon) vs. chair battle and the director cameo. That's method acting.

2. The Other Sister
I saw this in the theater and was rolling around laughing in fits. I let out a squirt of pee and hyperventilated at the dramatic fight scene. I was told I was being "insensitive" and "behaving like a bigot" for laughing by my date and I had to go sit by myself and squirt again at the wedding scene. I think Juliette Lewis played the same character in Gilbert Grape, Kalifornia, Natural Born Killers and Other Sister. She has a lot of range as an actor in that she can believably portray a whole rainbow of different shades of mental retardation. She's quite gifted. Perhaps that's also method acting.

1. Nell
OMFG. "Eviduh gun bea te inna win". I have seen this movie several times and every time I herniate myself laughing and can't make heads nor tails of any or it. But it's awesome in the sense that it truly is awe inspiring. To laugh at.

Honorable Mentions:
Never Too Young to Die (with John Staymoist)
Powder
Radio
Titanic
Lady in The FUCKING WATER!
Happiness
In Bruges
There Will Be Blood (finale)
Storytelling
Jigoku (Japanese Hell,1999)
Reflecting Skin
Superman 2
Blue Velvet (Pabst Blue Ribbon!)
Holy Mountain
The Entity (hilarious!)
Many honorable mentions, perhaps it should have been a top 20 list.
Please note that Zoolander, Ghost Dad, Office Space were not overlooked but intentionally omitted from this list. I don't get what any of my friends see in these films.

POST-APOCALYPSE IN 2010

Downloading is great. I can download a million reasons to stay home, but I can't download food. Or booze. Proving that even 2010 isn't future enough.
MY POST APOCALYPSE MATINEE: A comparison.
1. THE BOOK OF ELI
This film is set after a nuclear holocaust has ruined the continental US landscape as well as the sky and Malcolm X plays Eli who is working hard to ensure that Christianity and iPods survive in the aftermath. My two least favorite things about western society, #1 Christianity and #2 iPods. Also noteworthy is the post-apocaproduct placement. Gary Oldman is in there too, living up to his last name and playing a character I'm sure isn't too far a departure from his actual personality. Tom Waits has a bit role as an iPod servicemen. It ends with Jackie Burkhart from That 70's Show getting saved and praying before she eats cat or some shit. I didn't get to the end of this cinematic experience. Fountain of diarrhea.

2. THE ROAD
Depressing, meandering, well acted and depressing. But still not nearly as dark as the story I imagined it to be when reading the book and loving the holy shit out of it. If you watch this movie you probably won't want to read the book. Consider having your soul soiled by living out a father/son death march in an ashen scape of cannibal-rapist infested wastelands through your eyes for 100 minutes vs. living through it in your mind for the hours and perhaps days it might take you to read it in full, hauntingly descriptive detail. The film might dissuade you from picking up the book, a huge mistake. You should read it. Then when you see the movie you'll be all like "That wasn't so bad. No headless babies on a spit this time. Whew."

I used to look forward to the post-apocalypse until I read this book. Getting a feral makeover (Roadwarrior) and fortifying my domicile against mutants, making babies by the litter, making gunpowder and packing home-made shells for beheading would-be saboteurs with lye and buckshot blasts. Ideal. Now as soon as I see that flash and hear those concussing reports I'm going to take a bath with my toaster.

MISSISSIPPICASSETTESS!!!!

The genius of Montreal/PDX label Mississippi Records is no secret by now. I love any record label that is dedicated to an ideal quality in music rather than a single genre, and bonus boner for reissuing an archival catalog of bygone and world-over selections that would otherwise be consigned to oblivion. LP and cassette ONLY. Working to preserve music in the collective memory of culture and cultures is truly a higher calling, because god is sound.
Probably lesser known than the already classic MR-LP catalog is their counterpart entries, the MRC mix tapes.
Here I will present downloadable content and track listing for my favorite Mississippi Records Cassettes.

ASPHYX

HOLLANDAISE

When I think I Dutch I think of spliffs, farts in blankets and Asphyx. Only one of those is actually Dutch I believe. Asphyx are tough, mid-tempo death from the oldest school, which means that they are basically crust. This is roots, from back when metal had less than five genres and before Hit Parader was available in supermarkets. Before death metal growls and cookie monster vocals. Before gore, grind and CG artwork. Before Florida, below sea level. Klompen, windmills, cheese, dikes and death metal. The golden age of death. Here is a mix that I've made from all the early albums and then some, my own "best of".
Pass that Dutch.

DOCTOR RAY

I would be loathe to say anything good about Shibuya "scene" bands, so I won't. Unless you consider Molice a part of that, because they are really, really good. Definately not 'Shibuya Kei'.
This is the first CD I've bought in 2009 (whoa, it's July already) and I was pogoing around in my apartment to track 8 "BIRI-BIRI" like a fucking poseur. Hooks, angular guitars and discotheque bass lines, it could be Joey Santiago with Peter Hook backed by smarting drums and hissing open-shut-open-shut high hats. I want to say that "front people" don't make bands, rather that entire bands make bands but this band is expenentially improved by Rinko's voice and persona. Imagine if (you can withstand it) Kathleen Hanna (circa Reject All American) accepts egg donation from Chrissie Hynde before fucking Iggy, Byrne, Joey and Thunders, having a baby in 1979 and it squirts out full-blooded Japanese. The paternity test results are up to you, but I can't seem to make a descriptive parable to describe her without involving sex since she exudes it like lasers from all erogenous zones.
Their sound is being lazily described like a revival of proto-punk/new wave but I don't believe either genre existed and if it ever did exist it never died so I will venture to risk calling them pop. Straight up, awesome, catchy, technical and quick in tempo, but still pop. The bass lines alone are reason enough for my ardor. To make local comparisons (perhaps very accurate) I'd say I hear equal parts Number Girl and Future/No Future era Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her and abroad they would be billed well between PIL and Joan Jett. The worst thing about this record is it wasn't pressed to vinyl and the jacket art is colostomy. Still, I believe that if (The) Molice are labelled Shibuya-Kei, then they are doing Shibuya a great service, firstly for being an actual 4 piece band with real instruments and also for their hint of "fuck you" attitude. Tokyo is a place that deserves all the "fuck you" it can get.

Remember: Pop music is of no consequence or effect. Just Dance.

<DOWNLOAD REMOVED BY ARTIST REQUEST> It happens.
Youtube:

Pee-esS: This album isn't yet widely distributed so in Tokyo it's likely easiest to get it at SunRain Records in Kouenji. Or from their site: themolice.com if you got credit.

READING LIST 2009: JANUARY~MAY

The Double by Jose Saramago
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
Marching Powder by Rusty Young
Storm Rider by Akira Yoshimura
Scar Lover by Harry Crews
No one belongs here more than you. Stories by Miranda July
Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert
Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino
Last of the Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper

Recommended:
No one belongs here more than you

Short, anonymously charactered stories written by genius. Having seen some "performance art" and short films by the author I was almost certain I'd hate this. After I'd read to page 7 I realized this would become one of my favorite books ever. It is.

Marching Powder

British coke smuggler gets tossed in Bolivian prison, but must pay rent. So, he makes/sells coke while inside until he owns the prison but he still can't leave it. True story.

Storm Rider

Late 19th century Japanese sailors shipwreck and become Americans on account that they are forbidden to return to Japan by decree of the Bakufu. Some make it back, some die trying, one boy accepts his new home but finds he is never fully accepted. So, later in life he returns to Japan only to find he isn't accepted anywhere. Based upon true accounts. All of the novels by Yoshimura are well worth your attention. I highly recommend you start with Shipwrecks.

The Double

A man with failures enough for two lives learns there's a man in every way identical to him out there who is living a very different life than his. He searches him out and when they connect his universe implodes. Typical, astounding Saramago head trip written in the de Sousa Saramago trademarked beautiful, grammar-defying prose.

Not recommended:
Grotesque
Scar Lover

OLD TIME RELIJUN: UTERUS AND FIRE (1999)

Cry baby falsetto caterwaul throat-sings in bloody heat with horny, sex slathered guitar and mammatus thunder-bump double bass drum thumps drop the needle in the grooves that ride up and down on Satan's bifurcate cock for the rite of solar union in the Temple of Dionysus' Uterus's cult gathering of the followers in an orgiastic throng of dance-fuck magick before the ritual kool-aid suicide/ascension pact and crop-dusted, beard-fuzzed jaw harp twangs and accompanying contrabass mass penetration party. Perhaps better self-described as sounding of train wrecks and crocodile piss. I can't cut rugs at any shin-dig without this. 'Uterus' has been in heavy rotation at my house since the 20th century. Best album of 1999, before the millennium bug destroyed computer civilization and records became henceforth lathe-cuts in tallow wax coated wooden circles and raves became the drugged-out hoe-downs that we all enjoy in our current utopia.

RADIOHEAD: BEST OF (1991~2007)

Someone gave me a burned copy of this, I listened to it. My verdict:

1) Radiohead drinks penis.
2) All of their songs gargle balls.
3) Intolerable.

THORR'S HAMMER: DOMMEDAGSNATT (1996)

Basically, after 2003 it's now "cool" to listen to metal or play D&D, according to the same fools who are walking around wearing Member's Only jackets and American Apparel, snorting up mountains of the devil's dandruff, sporting ironically-hip shit like moustaches, cornering hapless drunk girls at dance parties and forcing their cocks onto them. Being a fashionable coke-addled rapist is totally "DO" in Vice magazine and we have hipster culture to thank for that. I digress... Back in 1996 I was getting teased in high school for wearing a Slayer shirt and roleplaying during lunch. This is was recorded in 1996 when no one was playing doom metal because it wasn't cool yet and the future millionaires behind Southern Lord were in bar bands. That is, until a 17 year old high school exchange student from Norway came to the geriatric Norse neighborhood of Ballard, Seattle and became their singer. The vocalist of Thorr's Hammer (not to be confused with Polish NSBM band Thor's Hammer because apparently being Polish is the same thing as having Down's syndrome) Runhilde Gammelsæter has a voice with amazing bi-polarity. She can sing like Joni Mitchell or Glen Benton. On other recordings she is heard to screech, caterwaul and ululate like any manner of beast as well. This band is oppressively brutal, the songs center around a singular riff, glacial pacing and harsh, resonate sustain. Utterly dour, wintery sounds, evil. Thorr's Hammer got to play a couple shows in local taverns and record 3 songs in a studio before Runhilde had to return to the permafrost whence she came. The dudes of Thorr's Hammer went on to form Burning Witch (so good) next and eventually Sunn*, Goatsnake, Khanate, Teeth of lions blah blah whatever and several dozen other bands that sound more or less the same. Runhilde Gammelsæter later sang on a Sunn* song, a Khlyst record, put out a high-brow solo record of her own with help from an Ulver dude and finished her PHD, I'm told. There are also crazy rumors that she married someone from Emperor, Samoth as I heard it. Mortiis is definitely still single.
(former) 206 represent.

EYƎWTF?
I love this record for two reasons: #1. It's awesome, it's one 33 minute track that sounds like a never ending Disorder song. #2 Every time I've ever been asked to DJ anything, be it party, evening at a bar, 24 hour BBQ, between sets at a show, Purim, whatever, I always play it. Start to finish. It's the only CD I bring along. If I make a mix tape for someone, it's a C-60 and one side is SUPER ROOTS VOLUME THREE (3). I think playing only this and both sides of 'Yes - Close to the Edge' comprises a paradisiacal DJ set.

RAW POWER!!!!!!!!! SCREAMS FROM THE GUTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!1984!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to dust this off with an irretractable blanket statement: This is the best hardcore record of all time.
Now I will defend this statement. This band is a guido jerry-curl hair-tornado of lightning strikes and electric guitar cum. Screaming whammy bar guitar solos, massive heels, cow bell, any of these would be cool-demotions were it not RAW POWER!!!! When today's hardcore bands attempt songs like RAW POWER they just come off as self-parody but RAW POWER is like a Stooges record played at 45 rpms and it totally works! You can hear a fine balance of proto-punk rock and roll yin with latter hardcore yang. What's more, they rock from the balls but sing from the heart, what I mean is there's reality in their lyrics, intensified. Intensified reality, like getting high and reading the newspaper. Back then RAW POWER were like a band of fuzzy Italian velociraptors and they played as hard as humanly possible with all sincerity while recording this album. 'Screams from the Gutter' conclusively perspires behemothic riffage and elephantine drum battery, achieving a fine lather of both. You don't even need a brain to appreciate this record. First song 'State Oppression' and the deal is done, best hardcore record ever. 'We're all gonna Die!' too, seriously, every song on this record is my favorite song on this record. 17 songs, 26 minutes, listening to side A and B consecutively is the thrill equivalent to all of Shark Week. Hairnado!

DEATHSPELL OMEGA: INFERNAL BATTLES (2000)

French (from France) "métal noir" is haute couture (pronounced "hott cooter") right now. This is their firstish record from 2000 with the 'Disciples of the Ultimate Void' demo thrown in and a sick nazgul on the cover. This from when they played nothing but forthright black metal with less pretension. It would seem of late that within the genre a straight-forward approach has become faux pas (pronounced "fox pass"), and Deathspell Omega are on top of this, likely because in order to be really "evil" in a society of piss-drinking baby-eaters it requires much more effort than normal black metal bands exert in, say, sparsely-populated and conservative Norway. For example, foie gras (pronounced "fooey grass") is the most evil thing I can think of. I read somewhere that France consumes more porn than the rest of the world combined. Deathspell Omega are awfully sheek (pronounced "chic") stuff these days. Best served with hors d'ouevres (pronounced "horse ovaries"). Pardon my French.

PS: I discovered the singer is a morbidly obese bald guy. One more proof-positive example that the gifts of shred do not smile upon the fair.

LEVIATHAN: MASSIVE CONSPIRACY AGAINST ALL LIFE (2008)

I liked Leviathan before, but this time he used real drums. I would really like to support more of these onemanblackmetalbands but they need to hang up the drum machine habit, it's retarding. Drum machines are inappropriate for the vast majority of music (feel free to disagree, Europe, continent of twats) and even when acceptable, still, using samples of real drums is usually much, much better. Use of drum machines is something to be forgiven, if the band is worthy, few are. Seriously, when I got this record it was all I could listen to for like, three weeks, maybe. I even taped it so I could play it in my walkman while I went shopping for a comforter. Best black metal record of 2008 is a tie between this and Nahvalr, both of which are forging new territory for the genre. I sounded totally pompous just there, "forging new territory for the genre" and shit. It could have been worse, I could have wrote "sonic" or "aural" territory. Those slags at Pitchfork write like that. Fuck them.

THE WIPERS: IS THIS REAL? (1980), YOUTH OF AMERICA (1981), OVER THE EDGE (1983)

米国

1stアルバム"Is This Real?" RETURN OF THE RAT、Mystery、Is this real? No FairやWhen it’s Overなど壮大な曲が印象的でYouth of Americaにいたっては10分にも及ぶ。
Of all the bands that have ever come from the american Pacific Northwest, I'm going to say that the Wipers are the best. I've heard a lot about how 'influential' they were/are, but still nobody plays guitar like Greg Sage. His awkward chord progression, strummy riffs and weird hooks are the trademarks of He alone. I bought these three albums in a Zeno Records triple set for ¥8,700 (insanely expensive) on CDs! That should stand as the ultimate expression of love for a band. I needed them for an imminent road trip and I needed to hear Doom Town. Wipe 'till you bleed.

There Is Nothing Eternal Exists (2008)

This is MUGA, from a shithole called Nagoya. They have been playing shows around mid Honshu for over five years now and they seldom tour or record anything. They put out an amazing demo tape in 2003 and disappeared for a while, came back with a female vocalist and put out the magnificient S/T full length, the female singer killed herself and they regrouped after a long hiatus for another few songs which made it on a split with Osaka's Swarrrrm, then nothing for a long time. Now they have a new record out and it is fucking shaka zulu gnarly. It's shaka-gnar. I hope they don't go back into hiding after this. It might not seem so, but Japan has so few active bands that are anywhere close to being as good as MUGA. Give me a ring a ling if you want some ding a ling.

EARTH: EXTRA CAPSULAR EXTRACTION (1989)

This is obligatory, I had no choice but to put this on here. Nevermind the two legends guest-featured on this record (pun unintended), and really focus on the fact that this record is a critic's cumrag for reasons other than the personnel involved. It is a masterpiece of 20th century art and should be considered part of the western musical canon for all eternity. The third and final track is justification enough on its own. This album has no flaws, it is an impenetrable fortress of bona-fide bonerfication.

Post Script: There was a video made for 'Ouroboros is Broken' that was essentially a single damaged reel from an authentic 1950s stag film featuring buxom women riding horses and praying to Buddha in the nude. It was both mesmerizing and disturbing. I used to have a VHS copy of it but it is long since lost. Pity.

SKELETONWITCH: AT ONE WITH THE SHADOWS (2005), BEYOND THE PERMAFROST (2007)

If you like metal, no matter which sub-genre of metal you prefer, you will like this band. Straight up, outdated, timeless thrash metal. Like Destruction, Kreator or Sodom, if you don't like Skeletonwitch, you don't like metal. If you have no appreciation for metal (be it anything between a distanced affection stemming from a core of nostalgia and satire or balls-out, fist-pumping, B.C. Rich lust) then you must be a smooth-jazz vagina!

FORCEFIELD: LORD OF THE RINGS MODULATOR (2003)

This record is so good, besides the fact that the title references two of my favorite things. If Tolkien weren't such a god damn catholic he might have enjoyed speaking Sindarin-Elvish into a Space Echo over a hot cup of mescaline tea. For this record Forcefield is pared down to just Meerk Puffy and Patootie Lobe. The result is harsh aural fiber, less dancey. Hemorrhaging electronics recovered from warehouse fire tune in to eldritch entities. For adventurers who have their saving-throws memorized and lovers of harshed mellows. The exact reasons why this blog exists. I'm sad I missed this one on vinyl. Forcefield LPs are packaged artifacts.
